i got my car back early this week. to make a long story short, like about 1/2 the people i know with boosted H22 motors, i blew my pistons. all the ringlands were cracked. no compression. i rebuilt the bottom end with forged internals and sleeving by GE. it took forever, but it's back.
a few good things :
it started right up, first try
it has not stalled yet
i'm getting a full 22" of vacuum
the head gasket is not leaking
the new clutch is smooooooooooooooooooth
and this makes me most happy : NO PISTON SLAP or any other noises that i could attribute to the forged internals. (unless i don't know what piston slap or rod knock is, but it sounds fine, different, but fine.)
two bad things :
i'm getting an intermittent P0325 code; knock sensor circuit malfunction. it comes and goes, mostly at freeway speeds. i haven't had a chance to troubleshoot it yet. for now i just clear it as soon as it pops up. i'm staying out of boost until break-in anyway.
i have the software for the PMS, but have yet to get it to function properly thanks to whatever fubar scheme of copy protection/registration they use. my laptop is apparently "too new." the floppy drive works with a hundred other programs but not interacq.
...
all in all, i'm pretty happy. i have no idea if the power is going to be there, but it runs! the boost comes on so quick with jim's 9psi pulley that it's VERY hard to keep out of it. for now i have my map limiter disconnected, so dipping into boost briefly can't tempt me.
setup is endyn 9.5:1 pistons, 87mm, eagle rods, stock head, GE sleeved and step-decked block, jrsc with jim's 9psi pulley, efi system pms computer, cometic turbo head gasket (oops), hondata intake manifold gasket, iceman intake, crower cam gears, rc 440cc injectors, blah blah blah

Awesome to hear. I know what you mean about trying to stay out of boost on a new built motor. It doesn't take much to make the trasition in my little D16A6. Are you observing the ENDYN recommended break in? The 1st 200 miles are the worst. It took forever to go the full 1000. The only good thing about it is that if you get your PMS issues sorted, you've got lots of time to tune in the low RPM ranges.
Keep us posted as you rack up the miles!

you know, i don't have the paper that came with the pistons anymore. essentially, i have been babying it, varying speeds, not cruising for long distances or for high speeds at all. i changed the oil after around 100 miles. i was planning on putting the belt back on the blower around 500 miles but not going deep into boost until 1000.
do you have the endyn reccomendation handy, by any chance? or maybe you remember....... thanks!

I'm surprised Endyn didn't recommend going out the first day and doing some quarter mile tests...and maybe a couple Top MPH runs at Bonneville

heh heh. amazingly, my mechanic, who has a lot of experience building honda race motors for amateurs and professionals both, actually suggested something along those lines. he thinks break-in is a myth with modern piston rings, and said i should beat the car as hard as i like.
i was like... um.... no... you may be right, but i think i'll play it safe for 500-1000 miles.

Not that I have ever rebuilt a motor, but it would probably be a good idea to "break" it in and not simply BREAK it.
A "friend" at school got his *cough cough* saturn motor built and proceeded to blow it because he started beating the crap out of it right when he got it back. The fact that he built a saturn motor clearly explains that the guy is an idiot, but anywaayyy..just a suggestion..
I have also heard that regular old motor oil is the best to use for the first few oil changes.
